A Barrier System was a form of technology conceived by the Robotech Masters. It was often used on their own ships, but was not used on the ships of the Zentraedi, their slaves. The shields had numerous weak points, and could be strategically sneaked past in order to reach the hull of the ship, which included extremely unprotected, important components. (Masters Saga: "Danger Zone")

After the Battle-fortress given to Zor was sent crashing into Earth's atmosphere, the Human Race was able to rebuild the ship, and Emil Lang eventually reverse-engineered the barrier system, and was able to use it on the refitted ship, first as partial Pinpoint system and eventually as a full Omni-directional system. This was used to wipe-out all of Dolza's main fleet, ending the First Robotech War. (Masters Saga: "Force of Arms") However, this was also enough to leave a reading for the Masters to detect. They realized what had happened two years later, and left for Earth. (Masters Saga: "Robotech Masters")

The Invid also had replicated this technology, which they used to protect their hives. (Robotech II: The Sentinels) Upon viewing the barrier from a distance, Dr. Osmund realized this fact, (Robotech: Invasion) and began working on the H-109P Destabilizer, a device that could penetrate the barrier and the Invid Hive.
