Kauffman was a member of the REF who worked for Nova Satori as a spy.
In October of 2033, he, Lee and Bekka Cade went by a Zentraedi village that was destroyed by the Invid. Kauffman encountered Nathan Brill who held him at gunpoint until Cade saved him. After making a comment of Brill being an errand boy for Rev Somverville to bring back his son, Brill slugged Kauffman in the gut. Lee called in being under fire and it was by Rand who didn't want to go back until Brill was killed by the Quiltamma (Robotech: Invid War: Red Moon Rising).
In an underground city in New Portland made after the Zentraedi holocaust he lurked around the base to find info for Nova Sator1. After bumping into Rand and telling him off. He also reported his findings on the Invid back to Nova and the GMP. The Invid attacked of the Red Moon and Quiltamma and in the base he held Rand at gunpoint and interrogated him (Robotech: Invid War: Under a Blood Red Sky).
Rand tackled him and took his firearm. He was impressed with Rand despite being young and a Quiltamma came in and zapped him dead (Robotech: Invid War: Moonfall).
